12:47 am - so, hey...
So November 27th, I'm planning on being in Melbourne. It's kinda significant, cos I'm turning 40.

Yeah. I'm not happy about it either. I didn't plan to make it this far. 40 is like old, and grown up, and I certainly don't feel like I'm either of those.

The one thing I haven't figured out is where to have a 40th. If you have any ideas, or suggestions, for where I should hold this, please let me know.

I have no idea how many people I still know in Melbourne enough that would want to come to such an event. Anyway, let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions.

There's always people who may still be in town from OSDC.

I had my going away part at The Duke of Kent on Latrobe St in the City, $300 for the room and such $1500 minimum spend over the night the staff were really friendly the food we ordered was good. They have facilities fo a DJ to set up in or for you to BYO music on a laptop or iPod. Nice and convenient being in the middle of the city. Or The Parkview hotel on St Georges Road in Fitzroy is really good too, excellent staff. Mofo Lounge & Morocco Lounge 157 Greville St Prahran VIC 3181, (03) 9533 2181 more expensive but great atmosphere and plenty of comfy seating.

hmmmm ... OK

So on 0 ~ 9 scale just how debauched an affair would you be prepared to suffer?

Yay, win! :)
I assume you wanna go in the city or at most Windsor sort of distance? Hil's suggestion is pretty good, tho they charged like a wounded bull on drinks.

Does that pub we went to out the back of Chapel St do functions?

Birthday venues

http://www.murmur.com.au/ is an awesome venue. Drinks on the pricey side of normal, but not out of this world.

Otherwise, http://www.holliava.com.au/homehtml.htm is also fairly awesome.

Both places (last I checked) will let you reserve space free of charge. Holliava lets you phone-order pizza from across the road, has a fantastic drinks range a Melbourne Grungy Chic atmosphere and is pretty laid back. Insanely easy public transport access.

Murmur is more classy, a bit more expensive and only snacks are usually available. However, it's located near lots of restaurants, and the bar manager will let you organise alternative (cheaper) food through him if you pre-order.

What sort of event did you have in mind, and how many people are you considering?

Anyway, happy birthday for soon, maybe those suggestions will help you out.

I'd be in.

Are you looking for somewhere that does food, or just drinks, do you want to book a function room, run a tab, sit down dinner, dance floor etc? I have a lot of suggestions :)

And now that I've had some time to think about it, suggestions:
Der Raum
Madame Brussels
Grumpys Green
East Brunswick Club
Union Club Hotel

Otherwise there's always the Nott ;)

I can also heartily recommend Der Raum in Richmond. I once had a fabulous cocktail there entitled the Nitro martini, in which they use dry ice! It's the only time I've had a bartender tell me that my cocktail was safe to drink once it stopped smoking...
I also saw them serve a Long Island Iced Tea in an oversized tea cup and saucer, and one particular cocktail in a small brown bottle in a brown paper bag. :)
However, depending on numbers, you may need to book out the entire venue for a Saturday night as it is quite small and extremely popular.
