Did you read the boingboing articles? Apparently he pulled 3/4 of a mil in a couple of days.

It'll be more than that - that was just for the 2500 $300 deluxe packages, that doesn't count the people who paid $5 or $10 each.
Like the picture says, he just broke the riaa's business model.

kinda... you have to be SuperFamous before this really works for you, no? I mean, I approve and all that, but calling it the end of everything for the riaa is a bit much :)
No RIAA is the end of RIAA, there model seems to be sue the pants off grandmothers -> profit.

The current business model for artist success in the turbulent world of tube-deployed media is, apparently, requiring at least 1000 'true fans' and then a long tail of sometimes fans/purchasers.
Managing to get a review from a popular website could be the major break for most artists, these days. It's easy to follow links back to purchase direct from the artist's myspace or equivalent.
the larger recording companies only care about the artists that can sell millions of cds. they invest in new talent only looking for that one big breakthrough.
plenty of other smaller artists have done something similar to reznor before, but when someone on his scale does it, it makes it very obvious the existing business model is fucked.
